Fantasy Novel

Notes early 1980's comic alien invasion adventure with giant robots. Previously screened in Italy as "Daltanious".

Also known as Future Robo Daltanias.

Classification SF
Synopsis It is the year 1995. Japan has been conquered by an alien army from the star cluster known as the Akron. The cities of Japan have been destroyed, and the remaining survivors live in harsh shanty towns and villages. The ruins are watched by alien towers.

Kento, a war orphan, goes out to steal food and is pursued by irate stall-holders. He and his companions hide in a cave in order to evade their pursuers. In the cave, they find the secret base of Doctor Earl, who was an inhabitant of the planet Helios, a planet conquered by the Akron. Doctor Earl then fled to Earth, bringing with him the greatest achievement in Helian technology: the super robot Daltanius, whose power is increased when combined with the intelligent lion robot, Beralios. Doctor Earl conscripts Kento and his fellow-refugee Danji by dumping them into the rather comically elaborate mechanical pilot-loading mechanisms of the Altaus robot and a small space ship, Gunper. (These are two components of the combining super robot Daltanious, the third being the lion robot Beralious which is recovered after the first battle.) The aliens have been alerted, and the battle for Earth begins.

Review Viewers may note that as the series is set in 1995, it is already some years past its' sell-by date! The series features the kind of giant robots with elaborate pilot loading mechanisms popular in the late 1970's - it now all looks rather dated. On the other hand, this is a comedy, replete with the antics of Kento and friends, and their pig, and it's still quite funny. Apparently the anime is still popular in Asia. Worth checking out as an example of the robot anime of its time.
