Synopsis | Gauche is a teenager living in a country village, who plays in the local amateur orchestra. His playing isn't very good, and the conductor constantly tells him he needs to improve. A public concert is coming up, and Gauche practices far into the night, determined to impress the conductor.
Animals come to visit and comment on his playing, while he wonders if he is dreaming. An orange and white cat comes to listen, and wants to hear Schumann's "Traumerei", and offers him a green tomato from his own vegetable plot. Annoyed, Gauche tortures the cat with a discordant piece of music. The next night a bird wants to practice scales, but Gauche becomes exasperated and drives it away. A badger turns up the next night wanting to play drums, but when it criticizes Gauche's timekeeping the lad keeps his temper. The next night a mouse with a sick baby comes and asks Gauche to heal it. She tells Gauche that his playing has already healed many animals in the area. The joy this brings him enables him to bring real commitment to his music, and to regreat his treatment of the cat and the bird. This tale is based on a short story by Kenji (Night on the Galactic Railroad) Miyazawa. |
Review | The scene with the talking cat is hilarious. As for the rest of it, it's quite well done, and rather different from the standard anime fare. |
