Synopsis Ran, the laconic woman samurai and Miao, the goofy martial arts expert girl, helping out the citizens of a small town get rid of some crooks in this initial episode.
Dave Baryani

Tsukikage Ran was a high skilled ronin woman warrior. She appears as a wanderer and sorts out trouble in the village. Another heroine was Nekotekken no Myao, who uses the martial art called 'Nekotekken' (Cat Iron Fist) and follows after Ran. The first episode was a typical 'hero saves village people' type storyline.

Review Right from the start it is obvious that this is something a bit "special" - The opening music is a really old-fashioned song which made me feel that I had just walked into a "Benihana's" for lunch, then the show started with immediate fast paced action. I was reminded both of the Kurasowa samurai classics, particularly "Yojimbo", and American TV Westerns from the late 50's and early 60's. This skillful done "retro" feel was continued right to the ending theme which is a 50's style dance tune of sorts.
( very much an homage to "Yojimbo" ). The story line looks promising. The show is by no means a serious drama, but at the same time it was also not a farce. But it was none-the-less entertaining and I will definitely want to see more episodes.

Following Daichi kantoku's remarkable animation 'Ima Sokoniiru Boku', his awaited next project was, to my big surprise, a die-hard samurai movie!!!
It started with the traditional, hard enka sang by Misawa Akemi, who is one of the top enka singers. Listen to her awesome singing skills! Easily blows off numerous idol ' talent' singers! The lyrics of the opening song was written by Daichi himself.
What a great show! A die-hard Jidaigeki in anime! No one EVER, NEVER thought that samurai TV story could become an anime!!! Mr. Daichi is truly a genius! As a Japanese, I could fully enjoy the first episode. It faithfully follows after the established jidaigeki formula and never betrayed the expectations. A skilled ronin hero who has a weakness for sake! A comic relief companion, who is actually strong but makes mistakes by his(her) carelessness! A cute heroine! A strong villiain! Troubled people cheer the hero!!! Everything was beautifully to formula! Foreign fans should watch this!! This is the traditional Japanese entertainment. There was apparantly an original story of this. It was 'Surounin Tsukikage Hyougo', a hit live action TV in the 70s. This Tsukikage Ran was a full of homage for 'Tsukikage Hyougo', except that heroes are women' (g). Impossible break for jidaigeki, but other than that, this was quite a fun, established entertainment. Everyone should watch this. I am sure that it will expand your concept what anime is (^_^)

The heroine, Tsukikage Ran was acted by Yasuhara Reiko, who was one of the cast of Shojo-Tai and sang the ending song of Jyuubee-chan titled 'Forever'. She did a role for Abelia in Ima, Soko. She was a Cindellera girl for Daichi family. Okamura Akemi, who did a hero Shu in Ima Soko, plays the role of Myao, too. A village girl in the first episode was acted by Fuchizaki Yuriko (Kouran in Sakura Taisen).
