Synopsis A story of a supernatural being called 'Boogie Pop' and the people who live in the big city.
CALCI

Several young people have died or disappeared in mysterious circumstances, one being Saotome who died sometime after his transfer to senior high school. His girlfriend Yasuko has kept their liason secret but confides in Moto, a schoolmate. Moto, a terminally shy girl with low self-esteem, is the principal narrator of the first episode. Moto keeps her own crush on Saotome secret.

After Yasuko persuades her to come to a karaoke club for a group date with some boys, Moto is terrified when Saotome's ghost traps her in an alleyway. Later Moto encounters the ghost again, and discovers that a mysterious figure wanders the night defending people from further "Boogiepop" attacks. (GC)

Review One of the most promising anime series of the year, 'Boogie Pop wa Warawanai' (Boogie Pop Phantom). The overall impression of the first two episodes was 'Evangelion + lain / 2' (g). Dark, serious plot with high quality animation.
. Personally I don't like the style of Boogie Pop, too following after Evangelion style... dark, enigmatic...

A script based on novels rather than a manga is a hopeful sign. On the basis of viewing the first episode, this appears as an entirely serious drama of teen angst, horror and the supernatural, done with some style - a style that invites comparison with Serial Experiments Lain.
The depressed narrator, Moto, immediately aroused my interest and sympathy. The script, which jumps frequently between the 'present' and past events, vividly evokes the stressful social experience of being a school student. Things have certainly moved on from the early days of anime, when only the OVAs were explicit. In this TV anime, one character's loss of virginity is casually mentioned in the first episode. (GC)

Credits The animation director was Watanabe Takashi who did the Slayers series.
