Notes New show, autumn 1999

Synopsis The show is premised on the adventures of a little bird called Kyoro-chan, who is based upon a popular Moranga candy called "Chocoballs".
Review "Kyoro-chan". A very odd children's show that has "something for everyone". Surprisingly, the show is not just an extended ad for Chocoballs, but is instead a classic, "innocent at large" story about Kyoro-chan and his interactions with the bird-people who live on an island where Kyoro-chan has accidentally ended up. Each week we get to see Kyoro-chan's view on another of the inhabitants of the island. There are no battles, no "monster of the week", and no moralizing. Yet the series is always entertaining, humorous and insightful all at the same time as Kyoro-chan interacts with characters such as the Police Detective who lives a double life as a "Robin Hood" sort of character, the town gossip, a bank manager who just loves to dance and many others.

On an up side, "Kyoro-chan" continues to be simultaneously delightful and wryly satirical. In a recent episode the "rich family" of the town attempted to use their influence and money to monopolize the bread market. But this is undermined by their somewhat "different" son who has become infatuated with the girl who runs the town's original bakery. There are some nice bits of social satire in the meanwhile, as, for example, the townsfolk mob the new bakery because "fancy" bread containing caviar is offered on TV ads. But no one in town actually likes the taste of caviar, they only want the bread because it is expensive and trendy with the caviar in it. Rating A+
