Synopsis | The series is about a bunch of guys "discovering girls". (Dave Baranyi) |
Review | "Boys Be" started out like "To Heart" and immediately gave me a similar feeling. I didn't like "To Heart", with its heavy handed nostalgia and lack of humor. The episode of "Boys Be" that I saw ( I think that it was the first episode ) was very similar, but it was done from a guy's point of view. The series is about a bunch of guys "discovering girls", and this episode hammered that message in quite thoroughly. Kansaki, the protagonist of this episode, suddenly notices that his childhood friend, Chiharu, has developed a bust and a butt, and spends much of the episode starring at both. But this isn't a hentai show and there are no bloody noses.
The animation is adequate and the character designs are "generic modern". There was nothing memorable about the music from my perspective and the plot was totally predicable. From the preview for the next episode it looks as if each episode may cover the "awakening" of different one of Kansaki's guy friends to the girls around them, but I don't intend to stick around long enough to see. (Dave Baranyi)
The story was about adolescent boys who have become
aware of the existence of girls. The story goes loosely on
the omnibus style. The first episode was about the hero and
his childhood girlfriend. The story develops slowly and smoothly,
though the character design was immature. I felt it was because
of the production problem. Generally speaking, new TV shows
in this season look rather poor in picture quality. I suspect
that the production cost might have been pushed down again... That's
really a shame.. Or, ,many talented animators are being
hired to OAVs or movies. It will be apparent within
a year or so.
The episode (#5?) I saw was about a guy who plays baseball without much enthusiasm, and a girl who is a "manager" for the school baseball team, but really wants to play (but being a girl she can't play in the league). They practice together, then go out on a date to the swimming pool. Eventually he realises their relationship is more than friendship. It has rather the feel of "To Heart" but centred on guys. |
