Synopsis Space opera about a high school's worth of teen-aged space cadets trapped on a giant unknown space craft traveling around the Solar System. (Dave Baranyi)
Review This is a series that slowly moved its way off of my "B-list" and onto my "A-list" of current anime shows due mainly to the characters. And what a large cast of characters - this variation on "Lord of the Flies" in space has about 2 dozen individual major characters and several dozen more recognizably distinct minor characters.
This giant-sized cast is a weakness at the beginning of the series while everyone is being introduced, but it becomes the strength of the series later on as we get to see how the various characters deal with their situation and the pressures they are under. The series also starts out as a pure adventure show, but gradually evolves into something quite different, particularly as the pressures of command and responsibility start to get to the "natural leaders". A number of characters who appear to have the "right stuff" eventually show us that they have "feet of clay".
In the end, everything is resolved in a very satisfying and somewhat surprising manner. In fact, the main story finishes in episode 25, with episode 26 being both an epilog and a rebirth, but in many ways episode 26 is totally necessary for closure in the series.
All-in-all, I would expect this series to do fairly well if it is brought to North America. As it is, it is being released on video in Japan, along with a number of various sound track and interpretation CD's. So if you like a combination of space opera, coming of age, human drama and budding romance - Ryvius may very well catch your attention too. (Dave Baranyi)

Dave, I was missing this series because of the weakness of the characters and typical 'cliche' story of the Sunrise studio (ie. Vifam, Ideon etc etc) but have found out its unique nature and beauties. These explain the popularity of this show in many anime magazines. The story was complicated, and you need to have patience to get accustomed with the initial few episodes, but one you are accustomed, you will be hooked strongly. I can recommend it for the serious SF anime fans, and my overall ratiing will be A.
Highly recomended. (CALCI)
