Synopsis | I'm typing this from memory, but there are Conan websites where you can find out more. The setting is a post-apocalypse Earth. Lina is the grand-daughter of Dr Lau, and the only one who can help him communicate his inventions. She is being chased by agents of Industria, a fascistic nation. There is also an underground resistance. With the help of Conan, a fisher-boy, Lina makes her way to her home island, encountering on the way Dyce, the captain of a salvage ship and a rather slippery character. A warship from Industria pursues her to the island. For synopses etc, see Conan |
Review | A TV series directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
Future Boy Conan is highly reminiscent of Miyazaki's Laputa, which also has a charming young heroine, a vigorous young male hero, and lots of great retro style machinery, aircraft, flying sequences, high adventure, and so forth. One strength of FBC is the characterisation; there aren't just good guys and bad guys; there are plenty of vividly drawn characters whose loyalties are uncertain and changing, and it vividly depicts the experiences of ordinary people drawn into conflict. I have to say that, even though the Iraq TV picture was lousy, and the dialogue was in Arabic or something, I watched every episode I could record. For Conan websites, check Anime Web Turnpike.
