Fantasy Novel

Notes Originally a novel by Michiru Isawa, then a manga by IGARASHI Yumiko & INOTAKU Izawa.
Classification shoujo
Synopsis Farmer Bateman (or Borman) finds a dying woman and her newborn daughter in the Australian forest. Despite the opposition of Mrs Borman, they raise the child as their own.

Georgie lives on the farm with her two 'brothers', Abel and Arthur, and their mother, not knowing that she is quite unrelated to the other characters.

In the early episodes Mr Bateman is also present, but later dies in an accident while rescuing Georgie from a river. In the middle episodes, Abel starts behaving rather awkwardly towards Georgie, because he realises that he is becoming attracted to her as a young woman and not as a sister. Unable to handle his feelings, he resolves to go away as a sailor. Arthur also resists inappropiate feelings towards his "sister". Meanwhile, a young woman of the town, Jessica, sets her cap at Abel.

Georgie falls in love with a wealthy English boy, Dowell Gray. Abel confesses his true feelings to his mother, who in fury reveals Georgie's true origins. Later the action moves to London as Georgie goes there searching her lover and her birth father, followed by her 'brothers'.

Dowell Gray dumps his fiancee Elise, the daughter of the powerful and unpleasant Duke Dunkelin.

Arthur witnesses Dunkelin's drug-smuggling operations, is captured by Dunkelin's men and nearly dies in captivity. Abel is thrown into prison after killing one of Dunkelin's relatives.(GC)

The anime has a happy ending, with Georgie and the two brothers returning to Australia. However in the manga original, Georgie did have sex with Abel and bore him a son, but Abel died before his birth. So Georgie returned to Australia to live with Benjamin (presumably = Arthur in the anime). Abel's mother prevents him from getting on with Georgie because she is the child of a prisoner. A very different ending compared with the anime. (CSP)

Review Georgie & brother | Georgie's bracelet
A popular shoujo anime series. It has run several times on TM3. This has a few startling scenes of the sort that only the Japanese would think of including in an animated series!! Setting, 19th cent. Australia, near the sea, also England. This anime is attractively animated and it's easy to become interested in the characters. Definitely worth watching. In fact, if you like intense romantic drama and can follow the dialogue, you'll probably love it.
Second look: I found the melodrama of the London episodes (later in the series) rather a turn-off.
In the opening episodes of the series, much is made of Mrs Bateman's anxiety that her sons will develop un-brotherly feelings towards Georgie, and she has some negative feelings about the way her husband died after finding Georgie. And Abel, prompted by jealousy, beats up another small boy.
