Synopsis Lain, a shy and withdrawn girl of about 13, is given a computer by her father, which connects to a network called "Wired". Lain, taken to a club by her schoolfriends, sees a man shoot himself. She receives a computer chip, and learns that this is an enhancement to her terminal. Lain's personality changes. Several youths who have been playing a computer game on wired have panic attacks and kill themselves. Men wearing electronic goggles watch Lain's house.
Review This is a surreal and quite disturbing series, as exemplified by the scene where the childlike Lain, in her underwear, works on a dismantled computer unit, surrounded by cables and ISDN boxes that now take up much of the room. Explores the possible limits of virtual reality, networks, computer obsession and so on. This series is a must-see, but don't blame me if it does bad things to your head. Excellent designs, thought-provoking.
Not suitable for the very young or easily disturbed. (G. Cowie)

"Lain" had been building up to a climax while getting stranger all the time. The resolution of the show did end up surprising me, yet the ending was definitely appropriate for the series ( sorry, no spoilers ). While the ending is not a "happy ending", it isn't really a "sad ending" either, but that is also appropriate for the series. Thinking back over the series, I have to be impressed with the wit, intelligence, detail and effort that went into the show. This is a show that will not appeal to everyone. All of the episodes are convoluted and intertwined with many "teasers" and hints. But afterwards, you will think about the show whenever you push the "reset" button on an application .
