Review Between the continuing efforts of the "Kids Station" in Japan to put on old anime, and my friend's determination to find new shows for me, I continue to receive a rather varied selection of experiences. This evening, for example, I got to see the first episode of the old shoujo series, "Glass no Kamen", aka, "The Glass Mask".
The "formula" is working right off the bat in this "Cinderella"-type story. A determined heroine, struggling against immense odds, strives to reach her heart's desire. It isn't really to my tastes, but it is interesting from a historical point of view. But since I am currently "filling my quota" of classic shoujo with "Rose of Versailles", I'm going to take a pass on this show. (Dave Baranyi)

Garasu no Kamen was a classic. Based on the same titled shojo manga by Miuchi Suzue serially published by Hana to Yume (Hakusensha) Anime version was from 1984.4.9 to 1984.9.24 by Eiken/NTV. A Sugii Gizaburou's film. The original story was, a poor, unblessed girl Kitajima Maya awoke by charms of the world of play, and wished to be an actress. This was one of the classic straightfoward shojo manga'c 'clische' plotline and manga readers were skeptical about the success of this series because of this 'concept' was too old even the series came out in the 70s since the establishment of new shojo manga magazine called 'Hana to Yume'. But because of the excellent manga technic of Miuchi Suzue's talent, this series made a HUGE success and even became a social phenomena. There was a live action TV series, too. Anime version was a bit surprise because it was estimated too oldfashioned in the age of 1980's. The anime version follows the initial part of the manga faithfully, but the evaluations by fans went apart. Anime version didn't translate the real joy of the original manga so I can't say this anime version was very successful, but you can see what was told in the original manga. If you are interested, I recommend to check the original manga version. Surprising enough, the series is still on going for 25 years!!! (^_^) (CALCI)

A great story which is based on one of the longest running mangas. The character interactions along with the training which the actresses have to go through make this a great anime. Shingo Haraki is the character designer. (HBV) Rating ***
