Synopsis About pretty-boy band Bad Luck.
Review And here are my thoughts on "Gravitation"... This must be "Yaoi" season on Japanese TV for anime - first "Yami no Matsuei", now "Gravitation" which is based upon the "Kimi to Boku" manga series of the same name by Maki Murakami. It's a bit tough for me to review the first episode of this series, because I'm not really familiar with Yaoi series in general, so I'm not sure if what I'm seeing is simply in the "nature" of these sorts of shows, or specific to this new Wowow series.
BTW - there's a pretty informative bilingual web site for the manga at http://www14.freeweb.ne.jp/play/gpgfc/ .
First of all, there is no doubt from the beginning that we have some "serious" bishounen stuff going on here. The character designs are sort of "Saiyuuki meets Kaikan Phrase", with the main character, little Shuuichi Shindou, almost a red-haired twin to Goku in Saiyuuki. But there are no cute monster girls catching Shuuichi's eye - instead he falls for the tall, blond and "beautiful" Eiri Yuki, an up and coming novelist. Eiri would fit in quite well in a Watase Yuu story, except that Watase Yuu's leading ladies would probably get pretty pissed off on Eiri's "ac-dc" tendencies. ( I can just picture Ceres charging up at the final scene in tonight's episode where Eiri kisses Shuuichi in an elevator. (L) )
The opening of the show is a mixture of animation and transformed live action filming. There is also a lot of Watase Yuu-style "humor" in the show - pratfalls, a goofy supporting character, SD silliness and so on. The stereo effects in part of the show are pretty good too - the evening park scene was complete with barking dogs and chirping crickets which filled the surround sound. And like in "Kaikan Phrase", the back ground music was more "smooth jazz" than rock, despite the plot line of Shuuichi's attempts to get his rock band a break. But for the most part there wasn't any background music at all. The funniest visual in the show was the "Wad Bieser" beer that Eiri pulled out of the fridge, with the familiar red and white "Bud" cans. So what actually happened in the first episode, you might ask? Well, really not much. They spent a fair amount of time introducing the characters, then Shuuichi ran into Eiri in a park at night and became infatuated with him, then Shuuichi kept on following and running into Eiri. ( Over here it would be considered "stalking". (L) )
In any event, I'm not likely to stay with this show for too long. I'll watch a few more episodes to see how the conflicts shape up, but I think in the end I'll leave this show for audiences who are more "receptive" to the idiosyncrasies of this sort of plot line. (L) BTW - this is a 6:30 PM show, not a "late night" show.

"Gravitation" - Trying really hard to give yaoi a bad name. Even if the lead character was a girl, this story of a musician and a writer would still be cliched and dull.(Dave Baranyi)

A new WOWOW TV anime produced by Sony Picture. Based on the same titled manga by Murakami Maki serially published by monthly 'Kimi to Boku' A vocalist of a new rock group, BAD LUCK, Shuichi was severely criticized for his new song lyrics by a young guy. The person was a young and upcoming novelist, Eiri. Shuichi was ticked off and tried to claim against Eiri, but he fell in love with Eiri... A typical rock band based yaoi stuff..
The production control was poor and the artwork was far from the 'beauty' of yaoi manga character. A cheap promotion of a new rock group of Sony group.
My impression of the first episode was C. (CALCI )
