Synopsis | A middle school girl and her younger brother move to a new house in a town where their late mother grew up. As they come into town they see the old school that their mother went to, but they are pleased to see that they will be going to a newer school. They meet a neighbor kid, and as they go to school for the first time, their cat runs off and enters the closed-up old school. The kids follow the cat, are joined by the neighbor kid and his buddy, and then by another older girl. They then all get trapped in the old school by a dangerous, prankster spirit and have to figure a way to get out. |
Review | Appropriately for Halloween, I just watched a new ghost anime called "Gakkou no Kaidan" /
'Ghost Stories in School". It is on Sunday evenings in the slot previously held by "GTO". "Gakkou no Kaidan" looks a bit like "GTO" too, as far as animation style goes. The series is apparently based upon a movie, but as far as the first episode goes, it stands well on its own.
Overall, the action, animation, voice acting, plot and music of the first episode were done quite well and were very enjoyable. The atmosphere of the show is appropriately spooky, but in a reasonably good natured manner, with a number of twists in the story. There also is a bit of comedy, but "Gakkou no Kaidan" is by no means a spoof. So I happily asked my friend to continue to tape the series for me. "Gakkou no Kaidan "/"Ghost Stories in School" - This Sunday night kid's horror series is great fun and amazingly scary. It's based upon a movie and a book series, and the weekly shows capture a sense of menace and evil that makes recent "X-Files" episodes seem tame. I've got to admit, there are an awful lot of malevolent spirits in that town where the kids live, but the stories are all strong and the characters are building well. This is definitely a show to watch if you ever cowered under your covers in bed at night when you were a kid. This would be a great series to show to a couple of young cousins or nieces/nephews some evening, then turn them back to their parents and let them try to put the kids to bed. (L) The ending theme of the show "Sexy, Sexy" is also one of my current favorites. Rating : A (Dave Baranyi) |
