Synopsis Space war anime with "male" and "female" races fighting.
Review I had seen a lot of ads for "Vandred" in the last month or so. There was also a lengthy video preview on the Gonzo web site. The emphasis in the ads was on the 3DCG and so it is in the story too. There is also a plot of sorts, about some future time in space in which men and women have forgotten that they are the same species and fight each other as "aliens" and "pirates". The story starts out being told from the men's point of view as a dictator readies his troops with propaganda to take on the women. A big space battle ensues, and the women capture one of the battle ships of the men, at which point we find out, not surprisingly, that the women are actually young "babes" with huge chests and very skimpy clothes.
The episode ended with the hero and some of the girls being blown into some other dimension, no doubt to play some sort of "Tenchi"-style games, while the rest of the men and women are stuck in a "bargain basement" variation on "Ryvius".
A young "wannabe" space cadet hid himself onboard the captured battleship, and along with a navigator guy and a doctor guy, is captured by the women. Several of the girls take a fancy to the guys and spend a lot of time chasing them around to try to learn how to "play doctor". In the meanwhile, it turns out that the young wannabe is a "natural" at operating the space mecha that is carried in the battleship.
The side effect of the first battle was that the battleship was sent far away into an unknown region of space, and the women really don't know how to use the ship. So the guys have to cooperate with them to an extent. Also, another deadly alien force pops up to threaten everyone.
The series ends up as a 13-part cliff hanger, with a hint that there might be a sequel. If you like the sort of humor in shows like "Saber Marionette" or "Nuku Nuku" or "Steel Angel Kurumi", but want the girls to be "real" rather than robots, then you might like this series. However, it didn't do a lot for me. (Dave Baranyi)

VANDRED was the 2nd batter of WOWOW's new anime TV series. The first impression of this SF-robot-spaceship movie immediately reminded me about Macross and Nadeshico...
The story was the in the universe where man and woman were fighting each other. Each side tries to kill each other, using the huge space battleships and mobile suits. The setting was quite similar to Meltrandy and Zentrandi in Macross. Difference was the usage of computer graphics. Battle ships were drawn by the superb computer graphics and the animation was quite smooth. Still I found the script was a bit weak. The story begins when a poor lower class boy accidentally rode on a battleship and wore the mobile suits, and fell in love with a heroine during the space battle. A strange story.
Gourgeous computer graphics was manufactured by Team Gonzo (Blue Sub 6). The matching of handdrawn pictures and computer generated artworks have become much better than that of Ao6. Director was Mori Takeshi(Gun Smith Cats OAV, Fam and Ihrie etc) My judgement of the 1st episode was B, but there is a possibility of improvements. (CALCI )
