Review What can you call a 110 minute DVD that contains 16 short anime about a bunch of hopeless perverts trying to sneak panty or cleavage peeks? I guess the only thing it can be called is "Colorful", which is the name of this truly twisted late night series from TBS in Japan. The video catalog number is PIBA-7049 - yes, it's distributed by Pioneer ( they have their name in very small print on the case ).
You can also call it hilariously funny, if you don't mind enthusiastically sophomoric bawdy gags, mainly about the aforementioned losers as they go through all sorts of machinations just to "sneak a peek". There are some great stereotypes here - Steve, the American pervert with every type of camera known to man, the hugely busty and blond American English teacher, the sports coach who lusts after his innocent student, and so on and so on.
The episodes are not all simply filled with panty shots and nosebleeds - there are a number of imaginative scenarios, such as the EVA-like opening in which a Godzilla-sized school girl comes out of the ocean, picks up her uniform off of the deck of a super tanker, then calmly strolls through downtown Tokyo on her way to a rendezvous. Of course, all of our favorite perverts make a beeline for that part of town in hopes that the giant girl, who is wearing a short skirt, will pass overhead. Then there is the story of the hapless cabby ( whose cab also gets smashed by the giant girl in her episode ).
Despite the "topic" of the series and the endless variations on panty and bust shots, there is actually no nudity or sex in the series - "Ayashi no Ceres" beats "Colorful" hands down in that category. The animation is different too - a sort of a mix of styles from "Lain" and "GTO", as if they were being done for "Mad TV". Speaking of "GTO" - "Colorful" almost makes "GTO" seem calm and restrained.
So, overall, I found this series to be well worth the time spent in front of the screen, although I probably would have enjoyed it a little more if I had seen it in smaller doses. Don't expect "Masterpiece Theater"-quality plot lines or characterizations - "Colorful" is definitely not the place for that. But if you only want some "dumb fun" give "Colorful" a try. BTW - this would probably be a great show to have a bunch of buddies over and a "2-4" to enjoy - a number of the episodes don't even have any real dialog, so the "Japanese-impaired" can still enjoy it.
