Synopsis | Another saga in the sprawling and inconsistent Gundam universe. The date is the next century or thereabouts, and there are space colonies orbiting earth, under the hegemony of the Earth Military Alliance. Dissident elements in the colonies send five Gundams to Earth, disguised as meteorites, in order to introduce new weapons to the Earth. Indeed, as mobile suits go, the Gundams are far better than anything on Earth, except the rather similar "Tallgeese" prototype. Meanwhile, an organisation known as OZ is scheming to disrupt and defeat the Earth Alliance from within. They do so, at the same time neutralising the Gundam threat by targeting the colonies with missiles and threatening to press the button. Principal characters are the OZ leader and his assistant, the thoroughly hissable Lady Aun, the maverick Lieutenant Zek and his lover, then there is Ralina Peacecraft, daughter of a dynasty associated with the quest for peace, and the five teenage boys who pilot the Gundams. Ralina is in love with one of them. |
Review | Starts out being quite entertaining, as the Gundams kick ass, destroying everything in their way while not even getting their paint scratched. Lots of exciting action in the first few episodes. However I gave up in exasperation after 10 episodes of the Cartoon Network English version, tired of the endless moralising and unconvincing scenarios, and crypto-fascist worship of military force. The clincher was the scene where Ralina leans out of the door of a jet aircraft in flight, clutching a piece of paper and yelling at two mobile suit pilots to stop having an unnecesary honor duel. |
