Synopsis | An adaptation ofTsuda Masami's school
romance, directed by Hideako Anno of Gainax fame. Yukino Miyazawa and Soichiro Anno are both straight-A high school students - outwardly clever; good-looking; sporty; and perfectly behaved. But both are hiding embarrassing secrets of the sort that would not seem so bad to adults but are a matter of life and death for self-absorbed teenagers. Yukino is in fact a vain self-obsessed creature who laps up admiration and is prone to secret rages; and a complete slob at home. Initially the two are rivals to be head of the class but as their masks begin to slip they become emotionally involved. |
Review | Please note that there are plenty of other websites if you want a full account of this major series. The series is funny and witty, but I felt at first a certain lack of ongoing tension in the plotting. There is more than one episode ending where if you didn't know that it was a TV series that ran for about 26 episodes you'd be thinking, "Oh, that's it then...". A series that grows on you the more you watch, till you really love its delicate and intelligent depiction of clever adolescents learning to deal with their feelings. Beautiful artwork too.(GC)
Without giving away any of the plot (Ha!) here's what it's like:
Take all the bits of Evangelion that fit the following categories: "Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou" continues to leave me almost speechless with amazement at the show. I love the characters, the plots, the animation and the entire quirky approach. One good thing that the creators of the show have realized is that there is only so much that they can do with the romance of Yukino Miyazawa and Souichirou Arima , so they are spending time fleshing out their other classmates and friends. The past few shows have revolved a lot around Tsubasa, the tiny, red-haired classmate who initially causes problems for Yukino because she has a crush on Souichirou. But soon we see that there is a lot more to Tsubasa, who is having a great deal of difficulty accepting that her father wants to marry after years of being a single dad for her. The mixture of poignancy and humor avoids the bathos that often accompanies such plot lines in shoujo anime. In any event, now I am "in love" with both Yukino AND Tsubasa. |
