Synopsis
Review With so many "me too" anime out there, it is always refreshing to see something new and different show up - and the new Wowow original anime series "Brigadoon - Marin and Meran" is certainly different. I just saw the first episode and I was impressed with the imaginativeness of the episode as well as pleased with how quickly and enjoyably the situation and characters were established.
The show starts out with 13 year old Marin off on her bike in the morning to delivery papers. It is summer in the early 60's in Tokyo and Marin is the youngest member of a large, poor and rather eccentric family. After finishing her chores she sees a strange, green cat-like creature ( sort of like the black cat mascot of "Trigun" ) which leads her to an old temple in which rests a small, blue, pointy metal cylinder. Marin imagines a rather gruesome outcome of snooping at the object ( Marin has a very active imagination ), then she is chased out of the temple by an odd Mika.
Later, at school Marin is given an award, but is also "exposed" as having repaired underwear, at which point the skies become filled with a strange, geometric pattern that continues world wide. School is cancelled and Marin goes home, where, while she is admiring her certificate of merit, a huge, red cylinder comes down from the pattern in the sky and starts to chase and attempt to kill her. As Marin rides off on her bike in desperation she ends up back at the old temple where she throws the blue cylinder at the threatening red cylinder. The blue cylinder turns into a slim, tall and armored humanoid armed with a sword and a gun, which introduces itself as Meran. Meran fights the red cylinder with Marin along for the ride for quite a bit of the fight, and finally defeats the red cylinder. The episode ends with Marin still not knowing what is really going on.
Now, the above narrative doesn't give a feel for the strange humor of this show, nor the excellent action and animation. The characters have a bit of a feeling of the character designs from "Betterman" to them, along with a odd sense that Marin is sort of a more grown up Arale from "Dr. Slump". The overall background animation is very subtly detailed as if by water colors, sort of the way that the cityscapes were in "Gekkokamen-kun". And Marin is a non-stop blabbermouth, innocent in many ways, but snarky in others ( again like Arale ). All-in-all, this is a very promising anime and I will definitely implore my friend in Japan to keep on taping "Brigadoon" for me. You can see some more information on the show at the Wowow site at :

Ping Pong! You were right!! The director of this series was directed by Yonetani Yoshitomo, who did Betterman. I am sure you liked the mood. This is a classic 'the Knight and the Princess' type of story with retro sci-fi flavor.
The cute character of Marin was created by Mizutama Keinojyo. She is known as a very otakish SF illustrator. (CALCI)

I saw episodes 2 and 3 of this, or thereabouts, and my reaction was something like "Ho hum, another alien invasion anime with robots." Actually it isn't bad, and the heroine is well characterised and the way the way the other students discriminate against her because she is poor, etc is well on the mark. (GC)
