Synopsis | "Ham Taro" is a new TV Tokyo kids anime about a hamster, his owner and her parents, who have just moved to a new house in a new town. The hamster, named Ham Taro, does talk to himself and other hamsters, but hides his sentience from his owner. |
Review | This is much like many other kid's animal shows, but the interesting thing about this show is that other than talking, Ham Taro acts an awful lot like a real hamster. He always tries to escape his cage, chews on most anything he runs into, digs everywhere and gets into very narrow spaces. The opening episode was about Ham finding an escape route to the outdoors and meeting some of the neighboring hamsters while his mistress and her father take a walk around town.
The animation is quite nice and bright and the direction moves the show along at a steady pace. The hamsters are all "kawaii" and there are already lots of ads for shirts and what not with the hamsters' faces on them. This show is unlikely to have any "legs" as far as my interest goes, once the initial novelty wears off, but it ought to be quite popular with kids and should "travel well" over to North America if any company is so interested.(Dave Baranyi) |
