Notes "The New Snow White Pretear"
Creators: Junichi Sato and Kaori Naruse (manga)
The manga is published in "Asuka"
Classification shoujo
Synopsis Combines aspects of "Snow White", "Cinderella" and any of a number of mahou shoujo series.
The story is about Himeno, a 16 year old girl who is trying to adapt to a new home and life with her father's new, rich wife and two unfriendly stepsisters. Himeno's life is further complicated when she is chosen by seven "Leaf Knights" from a parallel world who want Himeno to take on the part of "Pretear", the combination of a girl and a leaf knight who has special powers to fight an alien evil that is trying to destroy both worlds.
Review I just watched the first episode of the new Pioneer/Wowow anime, "Shin Shirayukihime Densetsu Preetia", which translates as "Legend of the New Snow White". This is based upon a manga series in "Asuka" ( which I'm not familiar with ). The series is a magic girl story of sorts, with elements of "Snow White" and "Cinderella" mixed in. ( From the "look and feel" of the opening episode, I'm assuming that "Asuka" is a shoujo manga, but if not, please correct me. Thanks. )
The show starts with a little round, pink, cute flying "thing" smelling some flowers when a mass of evil looking black crystals rapidly rise out of a pond and a dragon head of crystal flows towards the pink thing. A tall, black-haired bishounen magician appears out of thin air and protects the pink thing. Then three more bishounen ( alright, two more bishounen and a guy who looks as if he escaped from the recent series "Sadamitsu" ) and three cute magic kids appear and they quickly dispose of the evil. But they see an image of our world in the water and decide that they have to go there to find "Preetia".
We then switch to a red-haired, genki 16 year old girl named Himeno, who is trying to adjust to her new life as an unwanted step-sister in the household of her father's very rich new bride, who is working really hard to be "step mom from hell". Himeno also has two step sisters who generally ignore her, other than to play the occasional nasty practical joke. From the opening scenes, it looks as if Himeno may have an ally of sorts in a sympathetic maid, but Himeno is too ticked off by how she is treated by her step family to notice at this point.
Himeno is also somewhat of a klutz ( seemingly de rigure in these sorts of series ) and stumbles into Hayate, the black haired "Leaf Knight" who is now on Earth, looking both for Preetia and for the evil which is appearing in isolated spots around Earth as red snow. Himeno and Hayate start off wrong ( again, de rigure ) But once she is accosted in a park by the entire Leaf Knight crew, she gets a chance to work together with them, in one of the more unique transformation scenes I've seen. The episode stops on a cliff hanger as Himeno is about to take on a monster that has formed in the park.
The show is very appealing so far. I didn't think that I would like it from the ads that I saw. ( I assumed that it was just another swords and sorcery story. ) But Himeno is an interesting character, and the seven knights are a different bunch of "heroes" from the usual types in these sorts of anime. There is also a lot of comedy in the show. The music is nice, but not particularly memorable so far. The animation is also fairly good, while not at the levels of some of the recent really well done anime.
All-in-all, this is an enjoyable series that I will ask my friend to continue to send to me. (Dave Baranyi)
Preetia (Note- Im going phonetically here because it suits me. There should be a contest for the romanization of the title of this show I've seen so many different variations on different Japanese sites.) This series is one of the pleasant surprises this season a semi-serious mahou shoujo story with an intelligent and interesting lead character and a nice mix of humor, romance and pathos. The story is a variation on Snow White and Cinderella and brings the mix of both nicely up-to-date. Even the monster of the week fight is kept interesting. Rating an intriguing and well-done twist on an old formula.
This is a shoujo series, so of course Himeno gets a crush on Hayate, one of the Leaf Knights, who, of course, refuses to return Himeno's interest. Himeno also has to learn how to be Pretear, as well as how to get along with the rest of the world around her. Things get even more complicated when Himeno finally finds out that there was another Pretear in the past, who also had a crush on Hayate, and who, when she was rejected, became part of the "dark side".
Things built up to a pretty dramatic conclusion, with several false climaxes, then ended up surprisingly happy. I figured that with the manga still running the series wouldn't finish with too high a "body count", but I didn't expect a "happily ever after" ending either.
The animation in the series was quite good, with lots of color and nice unobtrusive CG. The soundtrack was also good, although not memorable enough for me to rush out and buy. Speaking of buying, the region 2 DVD's will start to come out in September, but although I liked the series, I'm satisfied with the taped copies I have from TV and won't be ordering it on DVD.
So all-in-all, "Pretear" was an enjoyable and fairly satisfying series.
