Fantasy Novel

Notes 2001, Wowow,24 eps.
Based on a manga.
Classification -
Synopsis Warrior Louis shares his quest with three pretty girls. The show is set in what is essentially a medieval "university town" where Louie is a mediocre magic student but an avid adventurer.
Review This is a traditional swords and sorcery romp, done in a rather laid back manner. In many ways it is similar to the previous seasons Wowow S&S series Tales of Eternia, in that essentially not much has happened during the first half dozen episodes. None-the-less, it is a pleasant enough time waster and occasionally funny. Rating Okay, but really for fans of S&S comedies like Slayers.

"Mahou Senshi Louie"/"Rune Soldier Louie", was a 24 episode fantasy adventure that just finished on the Wowow satellite channel in Japan. It was based upon a still running manga series which has also spun off a number of novels. "Louie" is apparently set in the same world as "Lodoss", but it is a comedy, and the anime version was created by the folks at J.C. Staff, of "Excel Saga" notoriety.
Now, "Louie" is no "Excel Saga", but it was still a reasonably entertaining and sometimes funny take on the "fantasy/quest" school of adventure stories. Louie is a student at a magic university, but he would rather learn to fight with his fists than practice magic. Louie does have the size and looks to be a fighter, but he really doesn't have the skills and he isn't really your stereotypical dumb muscleman. But because Louie would rather go on adventures than study magic he stumbles upon three girls with whom he ends up having a number of adventures - Melissa, a student sorceress, Jeanie, a big, butch fighter and Mirellu, a tiny money crazy thief. At first the three girls want nothing to do with Louie, who is often quite a goof, but by accident Louie becomes Melissa's "protector" and the three girls get stuck with having Louie around.
The series is structured in a rather claustrophobic manner, with the early episodes involving "adventures for a day" sort of quests, where the four go off into the local countryside surrounding the magic university town, and have some sort of adventure. To an extent the approach to the story is almost like an adventure game where the characters have to go out from some location to battle monsters, find magic items and the like, then return. But a lot of the "quests" are excuses for jokes and "shaggy dog" stories. The series does end up with a somewhat self-consistent story arc, but this is almost an afterthought.
To a good extent, "Louie" reminded me a lot of the adventure anime "Tales of Eternia" which was on Wowow just before "Louie". "Tales" was structured in a similar manner, only it was just 12 episodes long. Like "Tales", "Louie" was well animated in a very bright and colorful manner, with a fair amount of good natured fan-service including a "bathing suit" episode.
All-in-all, "Mahou Senshi Louie" was a pleasant time-waster, but I won't be ordering the videos of the show, nor the OST, which was okay but not particularly memorable.
