| Review | WOW!!! Wowow and Pioneer have come out with what is so far for this new season, the definitive "pick your jaw up off the floor" anime series, "The Soul Taker". This late night, pay per view, 13 part series starts out with nearly indescribable action, animation that is almost too detailed yet at the same time garishly and deceptively simplistic, and a totally mind twisting plot that seems to be compressed from a lengthy and complicated movie. The opening episode was sort of a combination of "Lain" on speed, "Betterman", the "Pierrot Le Fou" episode of "Cowboy Bebop", and "Big O" but darker.
In some bleak, hellish future, 17 year old Kyousuke is in an abandoned church, where his mother is about to kill herself. Nightmarish flashes of reality, memory, dream and nightmare all combine in a flashing images that are moving so fast that it is almost dizzying. But was this a reality or a dream? Who really is Misaki, the erotically pretty girl in whose room Kyousuke awakens? What is with the graveyard and empty coffins? Who are the seemingly mad and possibly unreal representative of "Hospital" and his pink-haired assistant? Why is Shiro helping Kyousuke, or is he really? Why does everyone insist that Kyousuke has a younger sister, when he knows that he doesn't? I love stories that pose so many conundrums right off the bat. Add to this, incredible action, avant guard animation and an intense and intricate sound track, and you have an anime that has me glued to my chair and wanting to watch it again immediately. This is the series to see so far this season! (Dave Baranyi) The Soul Taker the most ambitious serious anime of the new season, Soul Taker has easily lived up to and surpassed its hype. Its on a pay satellite channel so it isnt getting as much attention as the shows on the free broadcasts, but it is by and far the best series on right now. Another nearly impossible-to-describe show - it is bleak, fatalistic and nihilistic simultaneously with being incredibly fast-paced with unbelievable action. Rating See this at any cost! (Dave Baranyi) Having seen the first episode, I don't know what I think of it. It's very strange. I don't feel it's one that I'm likely to pursue. (GC) |
