Synopsis | This is TV Tokyos late night anime series about a kid who wants to be the best fighter in the world. |
Review | I don't usually like sports anime - the "gambatte - gambarimasu" sort of dialog and plotting usually leave me bored. So I went into the new TV Tokyo late night anime, "Grappler Touga" with some trepidation. But as far as the first episode went, this is no ordinary sports anime.
This is a dark, violent melodrama about Baki, an incredibly strong 13 year old who wants to be the strongest man in the world in terms of fighting. Baki is already very tough - at the beginning of the show he takes on a hundred toughs in a show of bravado, and beats about half of them before they overwhelm him. And even then he isn't put off by his inability to defeat the entire bunch - he is dedicated to becoming tougher and tougher. The show already has a number of "wheels within wheels" plots going on in the background - in this sense it feels a lot like "Key". The animation is sort of a combination of "GTO" and "Key", with some "Saiyuuki", but there are no bishounen in "Touga". Baki, for instance, is a scarred, pug-nosed red head who would never win any "beauty contest". ( For that matter, most of the characters are scarred. ) The fight scenes are very brutal and well animated - it is obvious why this is a late night anime. And there is fighting in every other scene. "Grappler Touga" won't show up on any kid's cartoon channel in North America in the near future All-in-all, I was pleasantly surprised with "Grappler Touga". I will continue to watch it for a while to see what ensues. BTW - although the TV Tokyo anime main page mentions "Grappler Touga" with the other new shows, there isn't an inner page dedicated to the show yet. (Dave Baranyi) "Grappler Baki" - I'm still not 100% sure which reading of the Kanji is right - "Baki" or "Touga" - and even my friend in Japan isn't sure. But I'll go with "Baki" for now, because he is who the series is about. This new late night series is the sort of show that "fight game" fans have often dreamed about - tremendous and excruciatingly detailed violent action, mixed with a classic story line and one of the great "babes" in anime ( who happens to be Baki's mother ). Rating : A-
This is TV Tokyos hidden anime series about a kid who wants to be the best fighter in the world. Relentlessly violent and essentially about underworld characters, this is a very powerful melodrama with incredible action and fight scenes. There is a big surprise (in the truest sense of the word) halfway into the series, however, which still leaves me shaking my head. |
