Synopsis The show features grade school protagonists using intelligent toys to fight battles and save the world. The show is set in 2100 AD, in a web-connected world in which the kids can be transported ( a la the old Disney movie "Tron" ) to a cyber world called the Magic Gateway.
Review "Web Diver" is a new TV Tokyo/Radix kid's toy-based anime.
Young Keita is up all night at his computer, trying to break into the software controlling the Magic Gateway, when he finally does get in and downloads part of an intelligence program into his toy robot. But later on, when Keita, his little brother and some friends are in the Magic World, something goes wrong and kids start to get trapped in there. Keita gets out, but his little brother is left behind, with only a shadow showing in the real world. Keita's toy robot then contacts Keita and shows him how to get into the Magic World through his computer. While in there, Keita merges with his robot and they fight some web monsters who are involved in the problem. The episode ends with Keita having defeated three enemies, but not being able to yet save his brother.
In the commercials in the middle of the show, the "raison d'etre" for the show was displayed - Takara Company is selling web diver toy robots which are used as game controllers for fighting games. As you push and squeeze various buttons on the robot and move it's arms, the robot on the screen follows your motions. So what we have here are semi-interactive "Transformers" toys, getting advertised via an anime.
The anime uses standard 2D animation for the kids and their 22nd Century world, and 3DCG for the robots and parts of the Magic Gateway. This works okay except for the points when they have to bring the two together.
So unless you are a hardcore Transformers fan, or enjoy shows for 7 year olds, you aren't likely to get a lot out of "Web Divers". This will be another show that my friend won't have to tape for me any more. (Dave Baranyi)
