Synopsis | "Sugoi yo Masari-san" is a parody of the 1970's and 80's "gambatte/gambarimasu" school of high school student anime. |
Review | The Tokyo Broadcast System, TBS, is responsible for some of the least "typical" anime series. Some examples of recent series they have produced include "Devilman Lady", "Petshop of Horrors", "Colorful" and "Di Gi Charat". ( Check out their English language web page of series for sale at http://www.tbs.co.jp/catalog/index2.html for more examples. ) Now TBS has decided to "inflict" a new and very odd series on the anime viewing public, "Sugoi yo Masari-san".
"Sugoi yo Masari-san" is a parody of the 1970's and 80's "gambatte/gambarimasu" school of high school student anime. It's got everything - a super "handsome" high school student hero with "super" powers, deliberately cheesy animation with lots of flowers, musical notes and other things floating in the backgrounds, simple plots of the "battle" between "good" and "evil" and so on. The first episode of the show was made up of three shorts, as are many of the TBS anime series. Anyway, what was the first part about? Well, a new transfer student is about to enter a new high school. The new student is nervous about being accepted and becomes even more nervous when all the rest of the students act really strange when he is assigned to share a desk. The new student soon finds out why as his desk mate climbs over a wall to enter the class. Thus enters Masari-san - he is tall, with a huge shock of black hair jutting out from his head, wears a white body suit with large gold disks around each of his shoulders, "space cadet" style and talks and walks in a stereotypical "gay" manner. Masari-san styles himself the "Sexy Commando" and shows his "method" during lunch when a couple of toughs try to beat him up. After taking the first punch, Masari-san goes into a "slow motion" preparation, then unzips the fly and drops his pants to his ankles, reveling blue and white boxer shorts. While the toughs are amazed/horrified, Masari-san does a high speed attack ( while his pants are still around his ankles ) and knocks out both toughs. He then proceeds to draw a fake moustache and beard with a marker on the face of one of the toughs. In the second of the three short episodes Masari-san shows more of his "skills". While being attacked by three toughs this time, he once more goes through the slow motion start up and again unzips his fly ( again to everyone's horror ). This time, however, a pigeon sticks its head and neck out of his Masari-san's fly, looks around for a couple of seconds, flies out and is followed by a flock of pigeons. Masari-san then beats up the astounded toughs and once again pulls out that marker. In the third episode, one of the other girls in the class takes pity on the new student ( who has by now become Masari-san's unwilling "tomodachi" ) and tries to tell him how to avoid Masari-san's attention, but the girl is stopped by one of her friends. The rest of the students are more than happy to let the new student get most of Masari-san's attention. Masari-san then gets into a fight with a "handsome" competitor. To a good extent, the humor in "Sugoi yo Masari-san" is very much like the skits on shows like "Saturday Night Live" or "Mad TV". The philosophy is the classic "nothing succeeds like excess" approach, which means that the humor can go from hilarious to grating quite rapidly. I guess it would also help if I had seen more of those "classic" series that "Masari-san" is parodying, but they aren't amongst my favorite types of shows. All-in-all, "Sugoi yo Masari-san" isn't a bad parody, but as of now, I much prefer to the humor in "Earth Defense Family". I'll see how things go as the series progresses. ( These TBS series are often quite short, so this is probably not a big commitment of time. ) (Dave Baranyi) |
