Synopsis Set in the near future, a strike from space has devastated Japan and replaced much of Tokyo Bay with an area known as the "lost ground", in which many people have developed powers to create weapons by power of thought from any mass around them.
The "have-nots" live in ruined areas called "The Lost Lands" and are protected ( some what ) by a teen-aged boy called Kazuma, who has super psychic powers and can draw energy from his surroundings to produce power-armor around his right arm. ( The arm transformation is reminiscent of "Project Arms", but it is not biological, as far as I can tell from the first episode. ) Other characters, including baddies, can do similar things, such as causing fighting robots of various sizes to materialize.
Review "Scryed" doesn't appear as a word in any of my dictionaries, but it does show up in web searches on D&D sites, so I'm assuming that the katakana version of the title is a translation of a game word. This show from Sunrise looks a lot like "Ryvius" and has an opening theme that is quite reminiscent of "She Bangs". The "shtick" of the story is also familiar.
Kazuma is a rather odd hero and is reminiscent of Baki from "Grappler Baki" in his attitude. This manifests itself as a rather devil-may-care approach to life, combined with perhaps not too many smarts. But his attitude catches up to Kazuma at the end of the episode, when he runs into a kid from the "haves" who is better at materializing power robots. ( This series also uses the "open concept" robot look that is found in NHK's currently running series, "Muryou". ) So its hard to say so far if "Scryed" will venture off into something unique or continue to be an amalgamation of lots of other shows, but I'll continue on it for a while to see how it goes. ( BTW it's hard for me to look at the word scryed without thinking of the old joke about the Boston Taxi driver and "scrod", but that's another story. (g) )

Later: - I strongly feel that in this post-apocalypse shounen sci-fi series TV Tokyo has come up with another winner along the lines of "Ryvius". The action in this show rivals that in "Inu Yasha" and "One Piece". It also appears to have the potential to be a tragedy ( several important and sympathetic secondary characters have already been killed off ), so it will be interesting to see how it goes. Rating - A

Interesting show in which a force called HOLY is trying to subdue an area in which many people have strange powers. The HOLY personnel also have powers and there is a brutal struggle between a disorganised resistance and fanatics in uniform. There are also more sympathetic characters on both sides. The hero, Kazuma, acts like an irresponsible drifter when not fighting - one wonders how much of this is a pose.
Quite well animated, lots of drama, worth a look. (GC)
