Synopsis About a high school kid who gets caught up in the world of dojinshi (amateur comics).
Review I just finished watching the first two episodes of "Comic Party", the much talked about late night anime from this past spring about a high school kid who gets caught up in the world of dojinshi (amateur comics). The "Kids Station" satellite channel started to re-broadcast "Comic Party" at the beginning of September so my friend is now able to tape if for me. ( The original broadcast was on a limited number of specialty channels. )
"Comic Party" is sort of what I think of as "anime verite", as a parallel to "cinema verite" - an attempt to be "true to life" in a fictional format. So while there are a lot of comic or cute moments in the first two episodes, there is also a lot of exposition on the dojinshi business. This, along with the "verite" approach, makes "Comic Party" rather slow, much like "To Heart", which is constantly being referenced in "Comic Party". Also, like "To Heart", "Comic Party" has its roots in a date sim.
To an extent, the first two episodes of "Comic Party" remind me a lot of a strange combination of "To Heart", "Sugoi Marsari-san" and "Hand Maid May". Kazuki, the hero of the story, is another of the "too nice" sort of protagonists - he is dragged along, almost against his will, by his classmate Taisuki into first attending a comic convention, then to start to create his own comic. This puts Kazuki at odds with his long time "sort of" girlfriend Mizuki, who is not at all pleased at having to share Kazuki's attention.
The date sim origins of "Comic Party" show up early as Kazuki rapidly gets introduced to a number of cute and enthusiastic female dojinshi addicts. It will be interesting to see if the series takes a different spin on the "boy with lots of girls" plot or if it follows the lead of "To Heart" and has Kazuki be "too nice" all the time.
So right now I've seen enough humor in the first two episodes to keep me going. ( It also helps that I'm not paying R2 DVD prices for the shows. ) I suspect that those viewers who are really into fan conventions, fan art and the like will enjoy this series even more than I, but all-in-all, it's not too bad of a start.
