Synopsis
Review Whoa - even for a Friday night after a long, hard week at work, this show is almost too much "brain mush" for me. I just watched the first episode of "Otogi Story - Tenshi no Shippo", the new "lots of girls with one guy" show on the Wowow Japanese satellite channel and I'm still shaking my head. The guys at Wowow either have a lot of chutzpah, or they are past the point of no return with their sake.
First of all a warning - if you are burned out of the "one guy with lots of girls" plot and if the thought of another "Tenchi", or "Love Hina", or "Sister Princess" scares you, be afraid, be very afraid - because "Tenshi no Shippo" takes that theme "one step beyond" to a good extent, by marrying it to "Pet Cemetery". Goro, the sad sack hero of this story, not only gets sent three angel girls to help him out in the first episode, but the girls happen to be the reincarnations of his childhood pet goldfish, pet parakeet and pet hamster. ( No, I'm not making this up - I didn't bother to open up a bottle of wine with dinner this evening, although I might yet if I have any more shows like this on this tape. )
This concept sort of stopped me in my tracks - I mean, I had pets like horny toads and alligator lizards when I was a kid. Imagine if instead of a goldfish, Goro had had a "blow fish"! But then, there has already been a fair amount of the trademark Wowow fan-service in the first episode, along with the "elephant" symbols in the background when Goro loses his towel in front of the girls.
Getting a bit more serious about a ludicrous topic, the show does have the sort of bright, detailed animation that I've come to expect from Wowow shows. They also try to blend in a "fuzzy home movies" look to the flash backs, a la "Fruits Baskets". Strangely enough, there are lots of parts of the show with no background music or sounds.
But, come to think of it, "Tenshi no Shippo" really isn't too bad a show for a Friday night. After all, who wants to watch some turgid melodrama or mindless violence after a week of work? I think I'll keep on watching it for a while just to see if it can go anywhere - maybe I'll be surprised. Maybe Goro will get fleas.

"Tenshi no Shippo" 3 episodes seen I gave this show the best try I could, but by the third episode the mediocrity of the writing finally got to me and so I wrote to my friend to stop taping it for me. This story of a young man and the reincarnation of his dead pets as "angel girls" brings nothing original to the typical "guy with lots of girls" plot, and the humor is painfully dull. All that comes to mind is the idea that the hero sure "went through" a lot of pets. I keep on remembering the old cartoon, done either by Charles Addams or by Gahan Wilson, about the parents commenting on how the kids "sure aren't lucky with their pets", as the children gleefully have yet another pet funeral amongst dozens of other little graves in their back yard. Rating : none this one's for you only if you want supposedly cute girls with no plot, characterization or originality.

Dave, Actually, this project was conducted by the Gakken's MEGAMI Magazine, which features cute heroines in many medium like game, anime or manga. And Tenshi no Shippo was a 'fan's write-in' project. I had also a headache when I first watched this anime version, but am curious how stupid the ending will be.
If you estimate this was a doujinshi palody anime, the whole stupidity is well understood, at least in some regards...
But still...
CALCI shaking sleepy head..
