Synopsis
Review The TBS network in Japan tends to put on some of the odder anime - and odd mixes of anime - things like "Miami Guns" or "Devilman Lady" will play alongside of "You're Under Arrest". Their new Saturday late afternoon action anime, "Rave" fits in to this crowd in it's own odd way. The full title of the series is "Groove Adventure Rave", and it certainly works hard to try to be "cool".
When the episode started I thought it would be just another kid's action anime, but it turns out to be a lot of things in addition, including a parody of many other series. The show started out with a flashback of 50 years in which a swordsman unknowingly unleashes a powerful evil into the world just as he thought he was destroying it. We then flash forward to an oddly contrasting world of nearly modern buildings and whatnot, mixed with swordsmen, magicians and other anachronisms. A young swordsman, Haru, goes into a casino in search of "Plue", while a girl who is very reminiscent of Nami from "One Piece" is winning at roulette. The best and worst of the animation of the show happens here, as the nicely done CG of the roulette wheel is harshly contrasted with the ordinary animation of the characters and action. Haru inadvertently causes the girl, whose name is Elie, to lose all her money on a spin of the wheel that she should have won. Elie then proceeds to demolish the casino and leaves.
But outside, while counting what little money she has left, Elie finds herself accosted by a little white "thing", that has something resembling a dog's body, but with a round head and a conical, yellow beak. This thing, which turns out later to be the "Plue" that Haru is looking for, and gets "dognapped" by a local tough who enters it into a dog "death race". Elie rescues Plue after losing more of her money betting on it, then Haru comes in to save the day and defeat a bad guy who is wearing a key made from some of the material from the evil in the original flashback. Plue, Haru and Elie end up riding off into the sunset in a dogcart.
So I'm not sure where this series is going. It is obviously out for laughs as well as action, and it does do homage to all sorts of other anime. ( The main bad guy, Shuda, for instance, looks like he stepped right out of Dragon Ball. ) The action and BGM are okay, albeit neither is particularly memorable or unique. It will be interesting to see if they develop the characters any and if the background story gets filled in. So for now I'll continue to watch the show to see where it goes, but I'm not going out of my way at this time to "pre-order" any videos.

"Rave" 2 episodes seen: Another pleasant surprise, "Rave" is a really strange adventure series that is very reminiscent of "One Piece". The odd mix of anachronisms, post apocalyptic images and references to pop culture only add to the fun. This is the sort of series, however, that will look "old" quite quickly because of its reliance on current popular culture. But for now, it is a fun ride. Rating : B+ this show is for anyone who likes traditional boy's adventure anime done in a modern and quirky manner.

My notes from Minamcon for this say "Stupid fantasy" and I'm struggling to remember what it was like. Go figure. (GC)
