Synopsis A disease that changes people into monsters has gotten out of control and a special fighting force is trying to contain it.
Review I just finished watching the first episode of the new Kids Station/Gonzo sci-fi anime, "I Wish You Were Here"/ "Anata ga koko ni ite hoshii". This is an unusual show in that the first two episodes are available as "official" streaming video from http://e.goo.ne.jp/projecti/onair/ . The show is being broadcast in 16:9 format in a late night time slot. I've watched a couple parts of the streaming video, and it has been reduced in quality to make it reasonably fast, so its a lot like watching stills with a voice over. If you really want a feel for the series, watching the actual video is a must.
The show is set in the near future, where an alien virus has been creating mutant monsters which are being fought by solders who have been modified to contain nanomachines which form body armor. The body armor isn't perfect, however, and the casualty rate is pretty high in the nano-soldier platoon, which is making one of the solders, Yuji, pretty depressed.
Yuji is also spending a lot of time thinking about a strange but pretty girl who he occasionally sees around headquarters. The girl, Ai, has also been watching Yuji from a distance, and one evening she goes outside to meet him in the central courtyard of the headquarters building and watch the moon with him. But their meeting is quickly interrupted by sirens and Yuji has to leave, as does Ai.
The fight quickly goes out of control, as monsters essentially turn much of an office tower into a giant monster, but it turns out that Ai is being used to create and operate a giant energy "spirit" called Deva, which is used to destroy the giant monster and incidentally save Yuji's life. Both Yuji and Ai are much worse for the wear after the battle, but they are able to glimpse each other in the distance.
I'm not sure what to make of this show so far - I think that it will be interesting, but it is using a lot of anime cliches. The nanomachine suits looks a lot like BGC body armor, Yuji is a very typical "angry young ( anime ) man", and the various goings-on of the "powers that be" in the background is very EVA-like. But the poster for the ad campaign is very evocative, as is the music, the animation, particularly the CG, is very good and it looks like the characters and situation will be interesting. So this will be a show to watch for me at this time.

- I've only seen one episode of this sci-fi monster story, and despite it's similarities to "Blue Gender", I enjoyed it immensely more, mainly because of the interesting and intriguing characters. Rating A
"I Wish You Were Here" Damn this thing was only 4 episodes after all! The "Kids Station" broadcast this on a once a month basis so it was like following an OAV, without the cost. I liked it, but I'm not certain that it really lived up to its initial promise. Summary A sci-fi action show about a near future in which an alien disease has come to earth to create monsters out of ordinary people, and how the lives and fates of a solder with nanomachines in his blood and a young girl with mysterious powers are tied into the monsters. Rating : A-/B+ (Dave Baranyi)
