Synopsis Kasumin is aimed at preteen girls and is about 10 year old Kasumi Haruno, nicknamed Kasumin, whose parents suddenly take off for a year in Africa and leave Kasumi to live with some family called the Kasumis. The Kasumi family ( father, mother, older brother, younger brother, married daughter, and house help ) aren't human, but instead monsters known as henamon.
Review Kasumin is a fairly recent series that started in October 2001 on Saturday mornings at 6:30. It is scheduled to go for 26 episodes, so I suspect that this special was part of the halfway point break. The special was a collection of the first four episodes, interspaced with comments from the main characters. ( A number of links to Kasumin sites can be found at http://www.konaka.com/alice6/kasumin/ . )
Kasumin is aimed at preteen girls and is about 10 year old Kasumi Haruno, nicknamed Kasumin, whose parents suddenly take off for a year in Africa and leave Kasumi to live with some family called the Kasumis. Kasumi travels to the house of her namesakes to find that they live in a combination house/windmill on top of a forested hill. She also notices that the neighbors are very disquieted when they find out that she is going there.
Kasumi finds out why very quickly - the Kasumi family ( father, mother, older brother, younger brother, married daughter, and house help ) aren't human, but instead monsters known as henamon. And hen they certainly are the fathers face is always surrounded by a cloud and he has the power to send wind and clouds around with great force. The mother is dressed like a lady of the 19th Century and can create streams of billowing cherry blossom petals with equal force to the fathers clouds. The oldest son is a shy artist whose head is surrounded by cotton candy, which he can grow, spin off and give as gifts to be eaten. The youngest son can change into a flying seahorse-like creature and create flowing water and fountains anywhere. The housekeeper is one of those blank-eyed ghost-things that looks vaguely like a cactus, and a there are a number of Disney-like animate household appliances, including a hot water pot, a rag and a computer monitor.
The Kasumis are shocked to find out that Kasumi is a normal human they thought because of her name that she was a distant relative. But both the younger son and the mother want her to stay so Kasumi agrees to stay the night and is given the room of the daughter who moved out when she got married. As part of the deal for staying there, Kasumi is asked to help out by cooking, and agrees, but isnt happy when the father seems never to be pleased with the results.
The next day a surprise happens that upsets everything. The oldest daughter, who looks very human, comes back and announces that she has gotten divorced and has returned home. The father is shocked and mad at the shame of it and wants the daughter to go back. The daughter turns out to have powers like her mother, along with her fathers bad temper, and father and daughter fight until Kasumi intervenes. But when the daughter finds that Kasumi has been given her room she is outraged she really doesnt want to have anything to do with humans since her breakup with her human husband. Kasumi ends up in a room in the mill tower and subsequently gets pushed around a lot by the daughter.
But Kasumi is very spunky ( and probably too precocious for her age ) and holds up to all of the strange goings on, even to the problem that the kids at her new school dont warm up to her at first. She also has the problem of keeping the extent of the secret of the henamons hidden, despite the suspicions of classmates and neighbors. It doesnt help, for example, when two henamon brothers who are visiting get a crush on Kasumi, and they happen to be rubber boots. ( There is a very funny and a little twisted scene when the boot brothers first get Kasumi to stick her feet into them they both look very satisfied and Kasumi looks pretty disgusted. )
So all-in-all, Kasumin is quite cute and lively, but at the same time it is quite typical of pre-teen kids anime. The boot brothers aside, there isnt a lot there for adults to enjoy and the plots are very much oriented to family/responsibility/tradition and so on. So with all the other more interesting anime out there, I wont be following Kasumin any more at this time. (Dave Baranyi)
