| Review | I just watched the first episode of the new "Kids Station" anime series, "Blaze of Mirage", aka "Honoo no Mirage". This is based upon a long running yaoi novel series about reincarnation of ancient Japanese warlords into today's world. The first episode was full of dark, brooding "bishies" with mysterious powers, ominous background music and "moving lips" animation.
The story starts out as a young man along with a girl in a high school dress walk up to an ancient grave marker in a small outdoor temple, close their eyes, form purple fire around themselves ( the "blaze" of the title ) and cause the marker to self-destruct. Then the next day we see one of many near-clone bishies called Takaya who goes to save a friend from punks, but is surprised to see that his effeminate friend has beaten up the punks by himself. As the two walk home, they spot the girl from the previous night, who stops in the road and collapses as the friend stares at her. Takaya sees the purple flame around her and tries to put it out, but finds that it is cold and no one else can see it. More mysteries ensue as the friend sees a vision of corpses of ancient solders in his room and is saved by the intercession of the man from the previous evening. Later, the man informs Takaya about the reincarnation of the ancient warlords from the Sengoku Era and that he is one of them. As you might tell, the opening episode didn't do a lot for me. I kept on comparing it to the currently running "X"-TV and found "Mirage" to be very wanting in terms of animation, characterization, music, atmosphere and action. While browsing the web for background info on this series, I found a lot of Japanese and English fan sites, so I suspect that this series will have a good following, but since it is playing in an 8 o'clock timeslot ( right after the "go to bed" notice for the younger viewers ), I suspect that it won't have a lot of bishie "action" for the hardcore bishie fans either. (Dave Baranyi) I saw one of the early episodes, including that summarised above. My impression is that it's watchable but not great. (GC) |
