Synopsis A modern vampire tale, set in a dystopic alternative Britain, where a secret Protestant force hunts down ghouls.
Review It's set in a modern alternative Britain, where a Protestant force which wishes to keep its existence secret is dedicated to exterminating rogue vampires and ghouls. This force is led by the noblewoman Helsing (a character obviously inspired by the character from the Dracula novels).
There seem to be several categories of supernatural people, apart from the vampires. The heroine Victoria, who is one of Helsing's people, is quite a feisty girl even though she's dead. Then there are Resurrectors, humans with the annoying habit of coming back to life after being shot or stabbed.
In one of these episodes we encounter a troublesome emissary from the Vatican, who wants to rid Britain of Helsing's tame vampires, as well as the rogue ones.
In the next episode, a downmarket TV channel tries to attract an audience by exposing Helsing's lethal and gory activities, only to find that they're out of their depth. No doubt many celebrities would approve the neck-biting method of disposing of troublesome journalists.
Hellsing's tame vampire turns out to be thoroughly lethal. Wonderfully over the top action sequences.
I thought this was better than average. (GC)

Lucked out again! I just watched the first three episodes of "Hellsing", the late night 13-part anime that just finished a month or so ago. My friend wasn't able to tape the broadcasts of the series ( it was on a satellite channel that she doesn't receive ), so I took a chance and ordered the first R2 DVD, Pioneer PIBA-1220, 75 minutes, 4:3 aspect ratio. In the DVD box were a very nice booklet, including a pull out page of art, and a large sticker card. So what is "Hellsing"? Well, first off, it is a horror story about an alternate present day England which is being plagued by vampires, ghouls and other evil undead spirits. Fighting against those evil forces is Hellsing, a secret government agency that utilizes vampires and specialized forces against the evil undead. BTW - one of the great things about R2 DVD packs is you often get neat bits of information in the enclosed booklets. For example, the booklet in this DVD happens to define what "Hellsing" actually stands for:
"H"er royal
"E"nglish
"L"egion of
"L"egitimate
"S"uper natural and
"I"mmortal
"N"ight
"G"uard
You are probably thinking: "not another vampire hunter series". And you are right, it is "another vampire hunter series", but a very stylish, funny, gory, action-filled and erotic vampire hunter series at that. And "style" is a lot of what is good about "Hellsing". Not only is the animation daring and topnotch, the series also has some great background music, ranging from rock to jazz to blues and all really catchy.
Right off the bat we meet A-ka-do, Hellsing's head vampire hunter, and able vampire himself. He takes great pleasure at blowing away or ripping to shreds the ghouls and vampires he hunts down. In the first episode he also takes on a "protege", in the form of Victoria, a girl solder who is the only survivor of her squad after a run-in with ghouls. But part of the bargain in this is that A-ka-do starts Victoria on her way to becoming a vampire herself, something that Victoria isn't always too keen on. Victoria also gets a chance to join Hellsing.
So the first three episodes cover A-ka-do's and Victoria's run-ins with various evil-dead baddies, as well as introducing a number of other key characters including the mysterious head of Hellsing, Integra, who is a cigar-smoking, blond-haired woman. To a good extent, there is "something for everyone" in the first few episodes.
There are plenty of babes, with a fair amount of busty fan-service. There is also a lot of blood and action, often involving said same busty fan-service babes. There is also a certain amount of eroticism, both bishoujo and bishounen. And most of all, there are great weapons - particularly guns, knives and swords.
This makes these first few episodes seem a lot like a blend of "Trigun", "Master Moskeaton" and "Devilman Lady".
There are also a few "extras" on the DVD itself, including a fair number of sketches, a titleless version of the opening theme and animation, and some advertisements for other current Pioneer DVD releases. Let me tell you, it's a real jarring contrast to go from "Hellsing" to ads for "Snow-Sugar Fairy". (L)

BTW 2 - this is the first time I've received a box for holding DVDs that has an illustration on the inside of the box!
