Review | Well, the Japanese "Family Channel" is currently rebroadcasting the 1999
series "Himiko-den", but it looks as if this series is yet another "piece
of colored glass" rather than a "gem". First off, despite being a 1999
series, the general look, feel and style of Himiko-den is very much like a
late 1980's OAV series. It's an action/adventure fantasy of a girl who is
magically sent away as a baby during a war from an ancient world of swords
and sorcery to our world where she grows into a teen. Then she, and the boy
who originally found her on Earth, are magically drawn back into the past
world. The first episode takes a long time to set this up, while not really
telling much of what is going on. That's not bad in principle, but it is
done so melodramatically here that it becomes a chore to watch the
"paint-by-number" plotting.
Overall, the first episode was "ordinary" at best. There was nothing special about either the animation or the BGM. A number of people have commented that they like the opening theme, but it didn't do anything for me. ( I'm a jazz fan, so the OT was pretty much indistinguishable from a hundred other similar themes from my perspective. ) "Himiko-den" is apparently a short series, so I'll stick with it for a few more episodes to see if it gets any better, but I don't have high hopes at this point.
