Classification shoujo
Synopsis Cute magical cat-girl series.
Ichigo is zapped by a mysterious ray that scrambles her DNA with that of a wildcat. The next day, Ichigo discovers that she has developed the agility (and occasionally the ears and tail) of a cat. She can also transform into a pink-haired superheroine, Mew Ichigo. Some other girls have similar powers.
Review Saturday and Sunday morning TV in Japan wouldn't be complete without at least one traditional mahou shoujo series, and the new Kodansha/Studio Pierrot production "Tokyo Mew Mew" fits that bill rather well. And to its credit, TMM does take a slightly different spin on the "magic" bit, as well as shamelessly merging with another tested-and-true fan favorite concept, the "cat girl".
Ichigo is a rather genki girl in the first year of middle school who is surprised with the ease with which she gets the most popular boy in school, Masaya, to agree to go on a Sunday afternoon date with her. They go to a nature show and find that they are both interested in conservation of wild species. But as they enter the exhibition, a strange gold cat statue with jeweled eyes scans Ichigo as she passes through the gate and a computer screen reads her DNA and gives a message to two shadowy figures that Ichigo is the "right type".
After the going through the show Ichigo and Masaya go to a nearby park where Ichigo is puzzled by a nearby strange looking building with another gold cat statue on top. When Masaya goes off to buy some drinks for the two of them, the cat on the building sends out a red glow and an effect like a strong earthquake also happens. Ichigo is enveloped in the red glow and has a vision of a large gray cat which first floats in front of her, then merges into her. Ichigo awakens a half hour later with Masaya sitting next to her. The next day Ichigo is still in seventh heaven over the date, but starts to behave strangely - she becomes very agile - landing on her feet safely when she falls off the roof, she has a hard time keeping awake and she starts to end her sentences in "nya" sounds. This scares her and she starts to wonder if the previous day's vision had some substance to it after all.
Later that day Ichigo returns to that park to check out the strange building, but she is distracted by the sight of Masaya who is also wandering around. At that point, a small strange thing, similar to a flying jellyfish, floats in the air around near Masaya and eventually envelopes a nearby rat which is eating garbage. The rat turns into a giant rat monster with a third eye which attacks Masaya and knocks him out cold. The rat then turns to attack Ichigo, who is swept to safety by a blond haired boy who gives her a magic amulet and tells her to transform. Ichigo transforms into a cat girl version of herself, with a cute pink dress, cat ears and a long furry tail with a bell on it. Ichigo takes a few moments to get used to the situation and finally figures out a way to attack the rat thing with her amulet. The rat thing disappears, leaving a scared rat behind and some sort of cute flying thing that goes over to the blond boy's shoulder.
Another older brown haired boy walks up and congratulates Ichigo on her success. Ichigo is pretty ticked off at this point and demands some answers as she cradles the still unconscious Masaya. From the previews for the next episode, it appears that Ichigo will get some of the answers that she wants, along with another cat girl as a partner.
So what we apparently have here is an eco-friendly, biotech variation on Sailor Moon/Dr. Rin/Preetia. I found it to be quite fast paced and entertaining, but then I have a high tolerance for "cute" mahou shoujo shows. So "Tokyo Mew Mew" looks like it will be an unpretentiously fun series, so I'll watch it for a while to see how it goes.

"Tokyo Mew Mew" - This mahou shoujo series is very heavy on the "cute" and very light on plot and characterization. We still don't really know anything about any of the characters, except that Ichigo looks much cuter as a cat girl than as her normal self. So at the moment I have no reason to care about the characters. Given my druthers, I'd rather be watching repeats of "Dr. Rin".
