Fantasy Novel

Haibane Renmei is based on a doujinshi by Yoshitoshi Abe.

Synopsis A girl wakes up and discovers she is in a land where the people have wings, halos, and no memories of who they are before they came there.
Review The opening action, in a run-down range of buildings, is about a cocoon which hatches and releases a mature girl, who is put to bed and given a halo, which at first won't stay above her head, and who within hours sprouts a pair of wings from behind her shoulders.
When she grows stronger, her new life begins. She is one of the "Ash Wings", and soon a troop of them walk into town to shop, which they do by exchanging credits to get second-hand goods. The heroine gets a much nicer sailor-suit outfit.
It seems that the Ash-wings are not allowed by the humans to handle money, but have to earn credits which are recorded centrally. There is a high wall to one side of the town, and while the Ash-wings are there a group of sinister-looking travellers, the only people allowed through the wall, are also in town. They don't talk. Nothing happens, but there's a black bird (and a tingle of suspense) in the air.

All through eps #1-#2, I was muttering "F*****g weird!" under my breath, which I don't normally do when watching fantasy anime. This is really well scripted and animated. It's slow paced, and the first episodes are devoted to setting the scene and filling in our picture of this strange world. It succeeds in making an everyday activity like going shopping look fascinating.

Verdict: Excellent, and I really intend to track down more episodes of this.
