Synopsis Daisuke Niwa wants to do something special for his 14th birthday; give a love letter to a pretty girl in his class. So he goes out of his way to leave earlier than usual and does arrange it so he is alone with Risa Harata on their way to school. Things start to look great as Risa tells Daisuke that she likes him. But then she says that is because he isn't macho like the other boys and she wants to be good friends with him. Daisuke is, of course, devastated and embarrassed, so when Risa's sister Riku shows up Daisuke just grabs the letter and runs off.

Later that day as Daisuke arrives back home, we can tell that things aren't too normal at his house. At the start of the show we saw his Grandfather and Mother doing some incantations in the dungeon in their basement, but since Daisuke was pretty much blasé about the situation it didn't seem important. Now Daisuke has to cross a series of barriers and traps to get into the main part of the house, at which point his Mother and Grandfather congratulate him upon reaching 14. But Daisuke is still too depressed to pay attention and just goes to his room.

At that point, a change starts to come over Daisuke, and he runs downstairs in horror. He now looks different, older and has long purple hair instead of his normal spiky red hair. His Mother and Grandfather are jubilant - now that Daisuke is 14 he can now turn into the "Dark Thief" and fulfil his destiny. Daisuke wants no part of this, but his Mother promises him that he will turn back to normal once the night's caper is finished, so he goes off.

In the meanwhile, the Police and Media were there ready and waiting to see if the Dark Thief will arrive to steal a bust in a museum. Sure enough, in flies Daisuke, who has now sprouted large, black feathered wings. Daisuke gets in the museum, fools the Police and beats off a rather fey classmate named Satoshi who tries to hit on him while trying to capture him. ( This is, after all, shoujo. )

As Daisuke flies home with his loot, Risa is standing on her large balcony, dreaming about the Dark Thief, whose exploits she watched live this evening on a big plasma screen on her bedroom wall. Daisuke suddenly notices her in the distance and starts to lose control of his Dark self. As Daisuke starts to fall out of control towards the balcony, Riku comes out to tell Risa that the bath is free, so Risa goes in and Riku is left alone on the balcony. Suddenly Daisuke/Dark flies in and frightens Riku. He runs up to her to stop her from screaming, and his Dark instincts take over as he quiets Risa by kissing her. Risa's eyes widen, and she stops trying to struggle. So ends the episode.

Review My first thought as I watched the new Asuka/Xebec/TV Tokyo shoujo series, "DNAngel" was - this must be the season for "X-TV" clones. But once I started to watch the show, I realized that this was more of a cross between "X" and "St. Tail".

So what we have here is anything but your typical shoujo male fetish series. This mix of comedy and shoujo junior-eroticism works amazingly well in the first episode. The Kaito Dark parts are a mirror image of St. Tail, with Daisuke being the ordinary teen and Dark being the "bodice ripper" hero. Daisuke's family is appropriately goofy, and there will obviously be a romantic triangle with the two sisters. So as long as the series doesn't take itself too seriously, it ought to be fun.

BTW - as I browsed around the official website at www.dnangel.tv ( which is significantly better than the TV Tokyo site for DNA ) I noticed something about the creator of the manga that stopped me in my tracks. "DNAngel" was created by Yukiru Sugisaki, who did the manga for "Brain Powerd" and "Rizelmine"!!! I thought that Daisuke's classmate Takeshi looked like Tomonori from "Rizelmine".

So I'm looking forward to watching more episodes of "DNAngel" and hoping that it keeps up this amusing and imaginative approach to this story. I haven't watched a really odd shoujo series since "Shiawase-sou no Okojo-san" and I'm hoping that "DNAngel" fills the gap in my anime viewing.

This anime seems to have pinched half its plot and scenario from "Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne" and/or "Saint Tail" Asides from that, it's fun and quite watchable, but not exceptional. Animation and character designs, as in much modern anime, are quite good. (GC)
