Synopsis
Review Sure, "everybody" was saying how bad the recent Media Factory late night anime "Mouse" was, but I decided to buy the first R2 DVD anyway. Hey, sometimes what "everybody" likes I hate, and sometimes what I like "nobody" likes. So I just watched the three half-length episodes on "Mouse" volume 1, Media Factory ZMBZ-1531, 45 minutes, 4:3 aspect ratio, 5000 Yen. The DVD comes with a small foldout booklet that has some character info on one side, and advertisements for "Mouse"-related goods on the other.

Well, sure enough, "everybody" was right - "Mouse" is abysmal - sort of like finding mouse droppings in your cereal bowl at breakfast. I realized what I was getting into during the opening credits - it is a "Broccoli" co-production, which would have told me the entire story if I had known that in advance. Disregarding the mediocre animation and forgettable sound track, one is immediately struck by the total lack of original thought in this pitiful waste of DVD plastic. The cliché-ridden plot concerns Sorata Muon, a high school art teacher who moonlights as "Mouse", a super thief. Three impossibly pneumatic instructors from Sorata's school also function as his assistants in his capers, and provide lots of uninspired fan service.

The problem with "Mouse" is that nothing works in it. The jokes aren't funny, the capers are stupid, the characters are less than one-dimensional, and the fan service is embarrassing instead of being sexy. Essentially everything that worked and was done right in series like "King of Bandit Jing" or "Lupin III" is copied poorly and fails miserably in "Mouse".

The funniest thing about this whole, sad mess is the warning at the bottom of the back of the DVD case, where it says :

"For Sale in Japan Only"

I know why - they don't want mouse turds like this to get out where anyone else can see them.
