Review | Wow! What a breath of fresh air after the previous collection of "mouse
droppings"! I just saw the first two episodes of "Heat Guy J" on the
TBS/Bandai Emotion R2 DVD, #BCBA-1462, 52 minutes, 16:9 aspect ratio, 5000
Yen. This is another late night anime from last fall that I didn't get to
see during the original broadcast, but decided to chance with the DVD
release.
What we have here is a very lively cross between ( homage to? ) "Blade Runner" and "The Godfather", set in a far distant future city in the sea that looks a lot like San Francisco without any zoning controls. Daisuke Aurora is a 21 year old private eye of sorts, who teams up with a very large, very strong ( think the original Terminator ) android called Jay to investigate the increasing number of crimes that are proceeding from the death of a Mafia boss. But Daisuke and Jay are working for themselves as much as for any "common good", and there is a subtly done sense of irony and alienation in the entire setting.
As an action show should be - action is the center of "Heat Guy J", and it
is done with capital "S" style. The show oozes "Tres Cool", which is
emphasized by the music and particularly by the animation. We have grand
background animation, matched with great 2-D animation and well integrated
3-DCG. There are a few additional goodies with the two episodes - the de
rigure rendition of the opening theme without the credits, a music video of
the opening theme, and a fold out pamphlet with background material on the
show. But for detailed character and seiyuu info, you have to go to one of
the two official sites :
This show will obviously have a number of cross-currents in its plot and characterizations, which always appeals to me, so I will be ordering more of the R2's very soon. (Dave Baranyi) |
