Synopsis A fighting anime, with a fairly simple principle - what we have here is a world of "bankers" who fight each other for gold coins. The "banker" who wins the most gold coins gets his wish come true.
Review I just watched the first episode of another new TV Tokyo shounen series, "Croket", based upon the Shogakukan manga. The first episode was already sponsored by a "Croket" trading card game and a "Croket" Play Station game, both from Konami.

The most striking thing about "Croket" is how much it looks and feels like a "poor man's Dragon Ball". Most of the character designs could have wandered off a "Dragon Ball" or "Dr. Slump" episode. "Croket" is also a fighting anime, with a fairly simple principle - what we have here is a world of "bankers" who fight each other for gold coins. The "banker" who wins the most gold coins gets his wish come true. Now, don't picture these "bankers" in business suits - instead they are fairly typical of shounen action show designs - both for the good guys and the bad guys.

The hero of the series is Croket, a small boy with purple hair, a large wooden mallet and a little, somewhat alive, yellow piggy bank named Menchi, who is held together with tape and nails. Croket usually wears Menchi on top of his helmet. Croket fights other "bankers" for their coins, and occasionally does a good deed on the way. Croket's dream is to avenge his father Baagu, who was a legendary banker.

The animation is acceptable for a suppertime kid's anime, but nothing special. Likewise the music is okay but not terribly memorable. The story line is typical for this genre. The most interesting thing is to listen to Croket's voice actress, who also happened to play Ahiru in "Princess Tutu.

So all-in-all, while "Croket" isn't bad, it also isn't original or different enough to be terribly interesting unless you are specifically a big fan of "Dragon Ball"-style series.
