Review | I just watched the first episode of the new TBS series, "Tantei Gakuen
Q"/"Detective School Q" and I'd have to say that this was one of the most
embarrassingly poorly done anime I've seen in a long time. That's not to
say that the show was stupid or obnoxious, but the overall lack of quality
in all aspects - writing, animation, dialog, voice acting, and music -
made me squirm and fidget while watching it. But I do have to say that
"Tantei Gakuen Q" didn't set my teeth on edge the way that "CLAMP School
Detectives" did.
The story line is pure "Anime 101" - 9th grade student Kyuu would rather watch detective shows than study, and one day while out for a walk he bumps into an old guy who is counting his money while walking out of a bank. The money goes flying and Kyuu picks it up for the old guy, who upon counting it, accuses Kyuu of stealing 10,000 Yen. Kyuu pleads his ignorance and is being hassled by a cop, when pink-haired Megumi comes to his rescue, calling out from memory all the bills that flew out. Kyuu then finds the missing 10K note in the old guy's umbrella and the old guy takes the two kids for a treat before going off. Kyuu finds out that Megumi is the same age and is also interested in detective things. As they walk home in the dark they notice a figure on top of a building under construction, who suddenly falls off. When they get to the site, there, dead on the ground, is the old guy. A number of people also run up, including 12th grade student Kintaro who crashed his bike trying to avoid Kyuu and Megumi as they ran to the construction site. The police come and decide that it was an accident, but Kyuu and Megumi don't believe it because of their prior conversation with the old guy. The police don't agree, despite the clues that Kyuu finds, and leave the three kids to solve the mystery. Afterwards, as a reward, they are offered entrance to the exclusive "Dan Detective School". So what's wrong with that, you might ask - that sort of plot is used in "Meitantei Conan" all the time. Well, it's all in the delivery. Going back to the five aspects I mentioned above, let's look at how each is handled. First off, there is no attempt at originality in the writing - it is pure "paint-by-numbers" as the story attempts to cram way too much stereotypical background detail into one half hour episode. Next, the animation is mainly "moving mouths", with the typical scene having all the characters stand statically in a line facing the camera while their mouths move to the dialog. The dialog is mostly the characters spouting unconnected monologues in an attempt to rush some characterization into the first episode. Add to that uninspired voice acting, which was surprising considering that there is a lot of experienced talent in the show. Then there was the music, which was instantly forgettable. We've seen it all done before and done much better, in other series.
So the real "mystery" in "Tantei Gakuen Q" is - why would anyone bother to
put this on TV?
