Synopsis | "Gash Bell" is about Kiyomaru, a 14 year old genius who is not motivated to go to school because he is too smart for his junior high class. Kiyomaru's archaeologist father, who is doing research in England, sends a small demon that he found named Gash Bell to try to motivate Kiyomaru to go to school and make friends. Gash Bell looks like a cross between a small boy and a ventriloquist's dummy and is quite serious about following the request of Kiyomaru's father. Gash Bell also can do quite destructive spells, although he doesn't realize it while he is doing it. |
Review | After the intensity of watching "Narutaru" during the past week, it was nice to watch something totally goofy in comparison - Konjiki no Gash Bell, one of the Spring anime that I've heard little about. I had seen ads for the series during "Meitantei Conan" shows but had no idea about it other than it ran in Shounen Sunday, along with "Conan", "Inu Yasha", "Tenshina Konamaiki" and others. So when I spotted the first episode sitting on a Bit Torrent site, I decided to download it and take a look.
And the first episode proved to be quite a funny "look" at that. The first episode moves quite quickly and with lots of humor. Kiyomaru isn't quite the jerk that he first appears, and there are other people around town who also have demons like Gash Bell. To an extent, the set-up is reminiscent of a cross between "Shaman King" and "Mamotte Shugogetten". What is surprising is that many of the character designs are quite different - almost like "One Piece" characters (Suzume in particular). So while the show appears to be headed to a typical shounen "fight championship"-style plotline, if the humor can be maintained Gash Bell may well be worth continuing to follow.
One additional odd note - despite the fact that this anime premiered in April, I still haven't found any ads for DVD releases.
