Synopsis Elementary school girl Shina goes swimming while on vacation, is attracted to swim out to a Tori several hndred feet from shore, finds a strange star-shaped object and nearly drowns. The star-shaped thing is innocent-lookng enough for her to carry it on her backpack but has an array of strange alien powers, including being able to make both of them fly. Very soon Shina sees other strange things, from alien flying craft to other children also using alien objects. The others mostly use their powers in a cruel and malign way. Except for a girl, Akira, whose family run a restaurant. Akira cannot properly control her dragonet and is terrified of the whole situation.
Review I've also seen the manga translation from Dark Horse, which coloured my reaction to the anime. The anime seems to leave out a number of scenes and details that were in the manga, making it seem a little rushed and disjointed at times. And I thought the "kiddy stuff" opening animation was somewhat inapproriate considering how dark the later parts of the anime become.

However this is a spectacular and dramatic anime worth watching. It powerfully engages one's feelings, as the heroine is unusually young for an anime with such a sombre theme.
