Review | The other night I had the chance to watch the first R2 DVD of the recent TV Tokyo Saturday morning anime series, "The Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok" - Frontier Works ASHB-1223, 3,000 Yen, 44 minutes ( episodes 1 & 2 ), 4:3 aspect ratio. The package includes a small color booklet and a trading card and the DVD has a creditless version of the opening theme as an omake, along with a few ads for show-related items.
A few weeks ago, while I was reviewing the order that included this DVD, I found that I couldn't remember why I had decided to try out this series. That's usually not a good sign, and so I was wary of what I might get, but to my surprise, the first two episodes of "Loki Ragnarok" turned out to be quite entertaining. What we have here is sort of a parody of typical TV Tokyo shounen action/mystery series. Seventeen year old Daidouji Mayura wants to be a paranormal investigator, and quite enthusiastically ( and usually unsuccessfully ) tries to find the paranormal in "all the wrong places". But one day she does stumble upon a mysterious talking and flying doll, and because of it, also stumbles upon an even more mysterious detective – a boy named Loki who lives in a mysterious mansion and who has more than the usual deductive powers. But this setup doesn't lead to just another "Meitantei Conan" clone, but instead to a smart, funny and surprisingly well animated show. It's the humor in "Loki Ragnarok" that differentiates it from so many other shounen magical-action series such as "Spiral". All of the characters we meet in the first couple of episodes have their own foibles and pretensions, and all suffer from them in funny ways. For example, Loki is just "too cute", and gets way more attention from girls than he wants, and in ways that he doesn't want either. Mayura doesn't really realize that the paranormal is all around her, particularly when Loki is around. (It's sort of like the grand, old spoof that Mad Magazine did of "X-Files".) Instead she keeps on trying to make something special out of the ordinary while totally missing the extraordinary. In addition, there are lots of running jokes, such as Mayura's frustration at all the guys who look for "cute girls" but just ignore Mayura or take her for granted. Mayura keeps on calling out "What about me?".
So what we have here is light, unpretentious humor mixed with surprisingly good animation ( particularly in the first episode ), good tight writing and directing, a reasonable sound track and enthusiastic voice acting. I can't be certain where this series will be going, but for now "Loki Ragnarok" is a lot of fun.
