Synopsis
Review Sakigake!! Cromartie Goukou, aka "Cromartie High", brings to mind the old Weird Al parody song, "Young, Dumb and Ugly" as well as the Okojo-banchou segments of "Shiawase-so no Okojo-san" in the way that it skewers the tough-kids-in-high-school type of manga/anime story. This TV Tokyo/Production IG comedy deliberately takes on the aura of a serious docudrama while presenting the most outlandishly ridiculous situations, sight gags and puns. For example, how can you not like a series in which the tough guy leader of one classroom, whose name is unknown to everyone because he is so tough, gets the nickname of "Freddie" not because of mad slasher films, but because of his resemblance to Freddie Mercury. "Cromartie" is definitely more than just a parody of manga and anime.

The first episode consists of a bunch of short somewhat independent incidents, although I believe that it is actually broadcast in a half hour late night time slot and not as a bunch of separate pieces. The narrator of the series is 16 year old Kamiyama, who is writing down his experiences in letters to his mother. Kamiyama is the proverbial innocent-in-the-midst-of-evil who, with determination, works diligently to fit into Cromartie High, which appears to be totally populated with toughs and punks. Kamiyama accomplishes this by means of a self-help book on becoming a punk. Then, due to winning a trial of strength that is mind boggling in its stupidity, Kamiyama becomes the leader of his class and thus needs to establish the supremacy of his class in the school, leading, for example, to his encounter with Freddie.

The previews for the next episode promise even more lunacy - for example, the leader of yet another class appears to be a robot, an alien or both. Then there is the gorilla. I wonder when they will expand into the realm of bawdiness. If you enjoy parodies, "Cromartie High" looks to be the thing for you. I’ve already located the next two episodes and am looking forward to seeing where this series goes.
