Synopsis
Review When I first saw the trailers and ads for "Tomorrow's Nadja" at the beginning of the year I didn't bother to check it out because it appeared to be just another weekend morning kid's adventure show. And when I finally did try out the first episode, I found out that my initial feelings were correct – "Tomorrow's Nadja" is essentially a nice, kid-friendly bastard child of the Miyazaki/Disney school of story telling, along the line of "Cerulean Sands".

We have a perky 12 year old orphan heroine, a pair of bad guys straight out of a Disney film, not one but two cute little mini-lions, a mysterious gem, a more mysterious older love interest for the heroine and a lost mother. What more could you want in a film for kids? The heroine even gets to run off with traveling entertainers, a la "Pinocchio". Sure, I realize that there is always a new generation of grade school kids who haven't seen this type of story, but I'm still surprised that the creators of the show didn't try to avoid some of the clichés of the genre.

The animation, dialog and background music are all adequate, and the story progresses at a smooth, predictable pace. But that's the fundamental weakness of the series – there is no ambition to go beyond the norms of this sort of story. There is nothing there that wasn't in some 19th Century adventure book for kids. To a good extent "Tomorrow's Nadja" felt like it had been made for North American kid's TV rather than for Japanese TV. So while there isn't really anything wrong with this series, there really isn't much of a reason for me to go onwards with it. But if you want a very traditional kid's adventure story, "Tomorrow's Nadja" might be your cup of tea.
