Synopsis
Review The other day I had a chance to watch the first episode of "Saiyuki Reload". Unfortunately, the title should have been "Saiyuki Misfire". Now, right out front, I'll state that I actually liked the original TV Tokyo "Saiyuki" series. The mix of action, humor and melodrama caught my fancy, and I kept on hoping that the background story of the revival of the demon queen would eventually play out. Well, that didn't happen in the first TV series, nor in the movie, so I was hoping that the new series might "cut to the chase".

No such luck. Instead "Reload" starts out deliberately self-indulgent and self-referential. Our four "heroes" are still on the road to the west and are now disguising themselves to avoid too much "fan adoration". They stop for the night in a town that has a demon problem and while they are there they raise the suspicion of a little girl who thinks the four are demons themselves. Then we have a red herring in the plot concerning some townsfolk who are raping and killing girls at night and letting the demons get the blame. Finally, we do get a mass attack of demons.

This is shounen action plotting at its worst – it's pure "autopilot" writing. I've got to believe that creators of "Reload" are aiming the series at a pre-teen, maybe pre-school audience this time – it's dumbed-down that much. I can't see any other reason that the episode would be so bloated and pointless – the producers must think that the audience doesn't know or care anything about plotting or storytelling. Maybe the series will make a big turn around in the subsequent episodes, but they sure wasted the first episode in a big way and I don't have a warm feeling that "Saiyuki Reload" will really get any better. If I'm wrong, please let me know.
