Synopsis It's set in 19th Century South China. Mao and his sister inherit the family restaurant Ju Xia Lou when his mother Pai, who was a renowned chef, dies. It seems that Mao is a promising cook, but a former chef from the restaurant, a nasty piece of work who was sacked some time earlier, returns and tries to claim the restaurant for himself.

The solution? a cook-off judged by General Lee, an Imperial official with responsibility for controlling cooking in the Province. Mao wins, and General Lee is sufficiently impressed to urge him to embark on an apprenticeship to become a Master Chef.

Mao travels to another city and finds the restaurant recommended to him, but after being "shown the door" has to pass another cooking challenge before they take him seriously. He also meets the senior chef's daughter, who becomes Mao's friend/girlfriend.

So begins a series devoted to fantastical cooking and cooking challenges.

Review There aren't many cooking anime so this is something unusual. Even if you are not interested in Chinese cooking at all, the story makes you take a passive interest in the subject (just as Hikaru no Go does for Go and Attack no 1 does for volleyball). It's rather fun, with lightning speed chopping of ingredients and fantasy swirling sequences as the characters really get into their cooking.

The storyline consists of a series of cooking challenges as Mao develops his skills and seeks to persuade or defeat other characters by his cooking. The fansub I saw had Chinese dialog, not the original Japanese. Since it's set in China, this was something of a plus.

The opening theme music is very catchy, so much so that I sometimes played it twice.

I wold not call this series a must-see, but if you do track it down and view it you are unlikely to be disappointed. [GC]
