| Title (Japanese) | Kochira katsushika ku kameari kouenmae hashutsujo | Advertising Fantasy Novel |
|
| Notes | Comic police series, 303+ episodes |
| Classification | - |
| Synopsis | Story about a thickset, buffoon-ish police officer stationed at the Katsushika police box, a typical suburban police station, and his colleagues, who include an exasperated boss, and a good-looking policewoman from a wealthy family. There is a large admixture of fantasy and comedy in the stories. |
| Review | I discovered this series by accident on TVCi (Catalonia). Over 300 episodes have been produced, - the only fansubbed episode available for download is number 303.
Comparisons with "You're Under Arrest" are inevitable. However "Kochikame" has only one cute policewoman among the lead characters, while YUA has about four. "Kochikame" has
many more episodes than YUA, but seems to be much less well known.
In episode 303, an inventor turns up outside the police station with a body-swapping machine. Kankichi and Ryouko try it (Ryouko mistakes it for a photo booth), and the next morning
Kankichi finds himself in his squalid room, but with Ryouko's body, and Ryouko finds herself in her swish apartment, but with a man's body. Ryouko is supposed to be meeting a wealthy
businessman that day, so Kankichi goes, and gets kidnapped. Eventually, of course, they change back. As far as I can tell from the episodes I've seen, this is an entertaining and funny series, but not outstanding. I doubt if it gives a realistic portrayal of Japanese police work any more than YUA does. In fact, the police are feared by ordinary Japanese and have a reputation for exercising their prejudices by deciding who's guilty themselves - a judgement usually rubber-stamped by Japanese courts. There have been serious cases involving foreigners where the Japanese police have made a poor showing. |
