Synopsis Kippei Katakura is a high school playboy who would flirt with any girl he sees. His life is turned upside down when one day, he has to start looking after his 5-year old cousin Yuzuyu who shows up at his house, after her mother has seemingly abandoned her. Now, Kippei must learn how to become the "mother" that Yuzuyu needs.
Review What a pleasant surprise! I just watched the first episode of the new Toei/TMS/Animax adaptation of the Ribbon shoujo series "Aishiteruze Baby" and it was really enjoyable. This is a smart, sweet and funny little story about family responsibility, caring, and a look into what it means to be a parent.

Kippei Katakure is a not very studious third year high school student whose main interest in life is flirting, at which he happens to be very good. While this impresses the girls at his school, it doesn't impress his big sister, with whom he lives, nor does it impress the rest of his family. But things start to change when Kippei's five year old cousin Yuzuyu-chan is brought to the house. Yuzuyu-chan's father died recently, and her mother (Kippei's aunt) decided that she couldn't take care of Yuzuyu-chan by herself, and abandoned her. So the family decided to take care of Yuzuyu-chan, and specifically decided that Kippei would be responsible for her! Kippei is terrified of his older sister, and can't fight the pressure from the rest of the family, so he gives in and tries to step up to the responsibility. And this starts to change his life as Kippei now has to adjust his schedule and life style in order to be able to take care of a 5 year old.

The opening episode is very well done, with a nice mix of humor and pathos. The animation is quite good and catches the typical look of Ribbon stories, the direction and timing balance the funny and poignant sections very well, and the music is very good, from the opening theme through the BGM to the ending theme. If you like non-fantasy shoujo stories, "Aishiteruze Baby" may well be what you are looking for in the new season's crop of shows.

The anime website is at: http://www.tms-e.com/on_air/beibe/
and the manga website is at: http://comics-news.shueisha.co.jp/common/baby/ .
The manga site has a very nice "movie" which captures the key points of the first anime episode via the use of a slide-show of manga scenes. (It helps to be able to read some Japanese.)
